This story was frustrating on many levels. I was interested in reading the book because of the connection to Anastasia Romanov. I am glad I resisted the urge to buy until I had the opportunity to get this for free on my Kindle. The story makes little sense, even for a paranormal read. Anne meets a boy named Ethan, who really isn't a boy because he is immortal and was a first hand witness to the murder of the Romanovs. Then Anne finds out that she is the missing link, the girl Ethan has been waiting for since that fateful day of the murders. Anne can apparently unlock the mystery of Anastasia's disappearance and can help break her out of the hut where she has been held, frozen in time, all these years.

This is where it gets even weirder. The author makes an attempt at mixing the fictionalized historical parts with a Russian fairy tale/fable. It doesn't work at all. Baba Yaga send her detached hands down to wreck havoc and keep Anne and Ethan from Anastasia? Huh. And the three horsemen thing had a big lead up like it was important and feel flat to me.

The best part was the climax and conclusion although what happens to Anastasia is sort of a let down. The book has some good. The story is easy to read when sometimes thats just what I need. It is a page turner and it is definitely unique. My biggest complaint is that I just can't shake the thought that this story may be somewhat disrespectful to the Roamanov's. There are a lot of liberties taken with this book and thats fine, the story is 100 years old but it should still be a little more respectful. There is no feeling for the deaths of the family...even Anastasia's recollections don't seem to feel all that grief stricken.

I think I just wanted more from this book. And trust me there are MANY better YA books out there worth reading.

Dreaming Anastasia A Novel of Love Magic and the Power of Dreams Joy Preble 0760789223976 Books Reviews

I really wanted to love this book. The blurb on the back sounded so interesting and I love historical fiction. However, I found this below my expectations. I just couldn't love the main characters. I was excited by Anastasia's story, the dreams, and the letters written by her, but I just didn't love the plot happening in present day. I wish the book had been about Anastasia and not the girl meant to save her. I found the plot slow moving at times and I had no interest in the male lead (which is rare for me!). I'm glad I read this book but I doubt it's one I'll reread.
I am not going to lie, I had HUGE expectations for this book. And I am very happy to report, Preble did not disappoint me. The book features an intriguing premise that is sure to captivate any reader with an interest in Russia history and folklore. This book drew me in rather quickly, and did not let go. The plot is very well paced. It is not too fast, but not too slow. In addition, every aspect regarding Anastasia and her life has been wonderfully researched and blends together seamlessly in this debut novel.

Preble's blend of fiction, history, and folklore is spellbinding. Throughout the novel, I would find myself thinking, "Ooh, I did not know that. Wonder if it is true?" Case in point, Viktor's heritage. The only flaw I can point out within this enchanting novel is Anastasia's journals. To clarify, this is not a fault of Preble's but rather the font used. The font was in a cursive format, which I had a hard time reading. While distracting, it does not actually take away from the writing; if any thing, it actually give it a more realistic feel.

Overall, I am smitten with this debut novel and its author. It has everything that I love in a historical novel. An original premise featuring a heroine that any reader can be proud of. Anne is spunky, and not afraid to get her hands dirty. Ethan sounds absolutely yummy. Tess is fantastic, and exactly what a best friend should be. There are just too many amazing elements to gush about. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.
I enjoyed this book. I like flipping around from different genres and it was about time for another YA book and this area of paranormal was new to me. Anne (spelled correctly, the reviewer in the listing either had a different text or just made a mistake) is a sixteen-year-old in Chicago who meets a mysterious newcomer that seems to herald the beginning of strange events. It reminded me a little of Becca Fitzpatrick's hush, hush even though there were no angels involved. The mysterious new guy at school, trusting easily even though events pointed to not trusting, the loquacious slightly to interested in guys friend, and her life being in danger.

Anne has dreams where she can see Anastasia from the Romanov family. She sees her as her family is killed, as Baba Yaga's large hands save her, and living in a hut with Baba Yaga. Ethan has magic and has been alive for decades but has not aged. Together they must figure out how to save Anatasia and avoid being killed. It had adventure, plot twists and good tension. It was definitely a fun rad for a snowy day.
The book was entertaining enough, but not one I would recommend. I'm glad it was free when I got it. The author didn't make me care about the characters enough. Each chapter was written from a different character's perspective, but bouncing around like that got a little confusing since all the characters seemed to have the same "voice". I'd read a page or two of a new chapter ( version) and then realize we'd switched characters again and I hadn't really noticed. I also think the author could have done a better job setting a scene and describing it more in detail. I kept thinking, "I'd probably be able to picture this better if it were a movie or something." Overall, there were chapters that made me want to keep reading and it was good enough that I easily read to the end and didn't feel the need to quit the book. The Baba Yaga portrayed in this story is an interesting twist, but I think the story as a whole could have been fleshed out a little more. It feels like she had to keep it under a certain amount of pages or something. The book may appeal most to 12-15 year olds.
